Honey and Toast Bespoke Service: From Doodle to Treasured Leather
From Heartfelt Doodle to Heritage Leather: Behind the Scenes of Our Bespoke Personalisation Service
There is something truly magical about a piece of handwriting or a spontaneous sketch. Whether it’s your child’s very first attempt at writing their name, a treasured handprint, a first family portrait doodle, or a handwritten note from a loved one, these tiny details carry immense sentimental weight.
At Honey & Toast, we believe that everyday luxury should tell a story - your story.
While classic monogramming has its place, our signature bespoke personalisation service goes so much further. We offer a truly unique service that transforms your raw artwork, doodles, or handwritten notes into a custom metal stamp, which is then hot-foiled directly onto our beautifully crafted leather bags and purses.
You can choose from 2 of our signature bag shapes - the Etter saddlebag and the Ava satchel. Also a range of small leather goods - the Bailey zip top case and Bella purse. There are of course styles that work really well for men - the sleek Ted card holder and classic billfold wallet.
In this post, we’re taking you behind the scenes to show you exactly how we turn your most cherished memories into timeless, handcrafted leather keepsakes - made to last a lifetime.

What Makes Our Personalisation Service Truly Unique?
Most personalised leather gifts on the high street rely on standard initials or computer-generated fonts. While neat, they lack intimacy.
Our bespoke service was designed to capture authentic human connection. We’ve stamped everything onto our leather goods, including:
-
Children’s first drawings and self-portraits
-
Handwritten signature phrases (those little love notes 'love you mummy' in a loved one's actual handwriting)
-
Babies’ handprints or footprints (paw prints too! I have even done a horse shoe...)
-
Special dates, coordinates, or secret messages
Whether you're looking for a milestone 3rd anniversary gift (traditionally leather!), a sentimental Mother's Day keepsake, or a treat for yourself, our bespoke process ensures no two pieces are ever identical.

Step-by-Step: How to Create Your Personalised Leather Bag
Creating a custom leather piece requires a balance of modern precision engineering and traditional British craftsmanship. Here is exactly how your artwork travels from a piece of paper to your chosen Honey & Toast leather accessory:
Step 1: Capturing Your Artwork
It's really easy - I do the hard work bit. You don't need professional scanning equipment - just send me a clear, well-lit photo taken on your phone.
Once you place your order and submit your image, I will review the artwork and let you know any feedback or recommended tweaks. I then recreate your image, preserving every wobble that gives your original photo its distinct personality, transforming it into a line based computer file.
Step 2: Digital Proofing & Visual Approval
Before any leather is touched, we send you a digital visual proof of how your design will sit on your chosen piece - whether that’s one of our beautiful leather bags or smaller leather gifts.
This step allows you to review the sizing, placement, and overall aesthetic. Once you have given me your approval, the physical crafting process officially begins.
Step 3: Crafting Your Custom Metal Tool in London
Once approved, your digitised artwork is carved into a bespoke metal tool.
We work with specialist toolmakers right here in London to etch your design onto a magnesium metal block. I use magnesium as it can be readily recycled. This metal die is an exact, raised replica of your drawing or handwriting, built to withstand the immense heat and pressure required.
Step 4: Hot Foil Stamping in Somerset
With your brass tool ready, it travels to our specialist workshop in Somerset, where Daren takes over - he is the only person working on these pieces.
Here’s where the magic happens:
-
The custom brass die is mounted into a traditional hot-stamping press.
-
The machine is heated to precisely 100°C.
-
A sheet of premium gold foil is placed between the heated die and your chosen leather accessory.
-
The press is brought down with controlled pressure, debossing the artwork deep into the grain of the leather while fusing the brilliant gold foil.
The combination of heat, pressure, and time ensures the foil bonds securely into the fibres of our Italian vegetable-tanned leather.
Why Choose Honey & Toast Leather?
A bespoke stamp deserves a material that ages with grace. That’s why we craft our custom pieces using premium European leathers, including our signature Bruton Vegetable-Tanned Leather sourced from a family-owned tannery in Tuscany, Italy.
Unlike mass-produced, heavily plasticised leathers, vegetable-tanned leather is dyed using natural plant organic matter. As you wear your personalised bag, the leather absorbs life’s journeys—developing a rich, supple patina unique to you. Over time, small scuffs can simply be buffed away with a soft cloth, making your bespoke bag even more beautiful as the years go by.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Personalisation Service
How long does a bespoke order take?
Because each metal die is individually manufactured in London before being sent to Somerset for stamping and assembly, our bespoke service typically takes 3 to 4 weeks. We recommend planning ahead if you are ordering for a birthday, anniversary, or a festive gift!
What kind of artwork works best?
Clear line drawings, dark ink on white paper, felt-tip doodles, handprints, and clear handwriting work brilliantly! If you aren't sure if your image will work, feel free to drop me an email before ordering - of course I am always happy to advise and help.
