What is Handle Drop? Why It Matters.
When shopping for a handbag, there are lots of little details that make a big difference in how it fits your lifestyle. One of those important details is handle drop.
What Is Handle Drop?
Handle drop is the measurement from the top of the bag to the top of the handle or strap when the bag is hanging straight. In simpler terms, it’s the distance between the highest point of the strap and the top edge of the bag’s body. The space for your body!
On the website I measure it in centimetres and helps give you an idea of how the bag will sit on your body — whether carried by hand, on your shoulder, or across your body.
Think of it as the vertical clearance that tells you:
- How snugly it tucks under your arm
- Whether it fits comfortably over a winter coat
- Or if it’s more of a handheld, crook of the arm style
Why Handle Drop Is Important
I believe great design is all about function as well as form. You might love the look of a bag, but if it doesn’t feel good to carry — if the strap is too short, digs into your shoulder, or doesn’t let the bag sit where you want it — it won’t become your everyday favourite.
Here’s why getting the handle drop right matters:
1. Comfort
A strap that’s too short can feel awkward. One that’s too long can throw off your balance or get in the way. Getting that “just right” fit is about ensuring your bag feels good, no matter how long you’re wearing it.
2. Style and Function
Want a sleek bag that hugs your underarm? Or a roomy tote that can swing by your side? Handle drop plays a big role in defining the overall silhouette — and how you move with it.
3. Practicality
Think about when you wear your bag the most — with thick jumpers? On the school run? On holiday with just a sundress? Your ideal drop may vary by season or activity. Most H&T bags are adjustable so they work all year round - adjust the length as you please.
How to Measure Handle Drop at Home
Here’s how to figure it out your ideal drop length.
- Grab a tape measure.
- Find a bag you already love to carry.
- Hold it by the handle or strap as you normally would.
- Measure from the top of the handle to the top of the bag.
That number is the handle drop.
You can also wear the bag and take note of where it falls on your body — at your waist, hip, or higher up. Then compare it to any bag you're browsing online. At Honey and Toast, we always include handle drop in our product descriptions - in the details tab, so you can easily compare.
Can You Adjust the Handle Drop?
Most H&T bags feature adjustable straps — especially our crossbody and shoulder bags — because we know every body is different. Some customers like a snug fit, others prefer a slouchy, low-sitting look. The Libby hobo has 2 handle options!
We also offer two easy options if you need a custom fit:
- Use a leather hole punch to create a new notch in your strap at home - I have a series of video tutorials I can send to you via email or WApp.
- Send your bag back to me and I can shorten or adjust the strap for you — just get in touch and let me know what you need.

Handle Drop as Leather Ages
One of the unexpected benefits of high-quality leather is that ss it softens and moulds with time, your bag doesn’t just look better — it also feels better. The strap becomes more supple, often settling into a shape that naturally fits the way you wear it.
